Google has launched a new AI-powered cybersecurity tool called Google AI Threat Defense. The platform aims to address rising concerns about advanced AI tools that can potentially breach software and operating systems. This move follows the introduction of Anthropic's Claude Mythos in April and OpenAI's Daybreak platform, based on GPT-5.5, in May 2026. These developments reflect growing global concern, including in India, over AI's ability to uncover large numbers of vulnerabilities in a short time.
Google describes its new platform as an AI-driven solution that continuously monitors and blocks AI-powered cyber threats before they impact organizations. Francis deSouza, COO of Google Cloud and President of Security Products, stated that AI Threat Defense helps organizations predict attack paths, prioritize significant threats, and deploy verified fixes faster than adversaries can exploit them.
Unlike OpenAI's focus on raw model intelligence and large-scale code scanning, Google has chosen a different approach. The company notes that current AI cybersecurity systems often overwhelm security teams with thousands of alerts. Anthropic Mythos and OpenAI Daybreak can identify many vulnerabilities overnight, but not all are dangerous in practice. Google AI Threat Defense addresses this by integrating code scanning with the cloud-security platform Wiz. The system checks if vulnerabilities are actually reachable from the internet or exposed through live network configurations. If a high-severity flaw is isolated, the system lowers its priority, allowing teams to focus on threats that attackers could realistically exploit.
Google emphasizes that its tool delivers prioritized fixes to accelerate remediation and maintain what it calls the Defender’s Advantage. Instead of providing security teams with a long, unprioritized list of AI-generated alerts, Google AI Threat Defense filters and ranks threats based on real-world risk. This approach aims to help developers and security teams concentrate on the most pressing issues.
The platform performs deep scans across millions of lines of corporate code. It uses lighter, cost-effective AI models for broad, continuous monitoring. For high-risk assets and complex exploitability analysis, it deploys Gemini frontier models. This layered approach enables efficient resource allocation and targeted threat detection.
Another key feature is the use of autonomous AI agents, supervised by humans, to rewrite legacy code into modern, memory-safe programming languages. The system can also analyze dependencies and automatically generate tests to verify the effectiveness of fixes before deployment. This capability aims to reduce the risk of recurring vulnerabilities and improve overall code security.
Google’s launch of AI Threat Defense comes as organizations worldwide, including banks and government departments in India, conduct security audits in response to new AI-driven threats. The platform is designed to help organizations keep pace with the evolving cybersecurity landscape by focusing on real, exploitable risks and automating key aspects of threat detection and remediation.
