Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, recently shared that he learned to fly helicopters to gain more independence in his daily life. A video of Zuckerberg discussing this decision has gone viral on X. He revealed that he wanted more control over his transportation and grew tired of relying on his security team for travel.
Zuckerberg discussed his motivation during an appearance on comedian Theo Von's podcast, This Past Weekend. He explained that for nearly ten years, his security team convinced him to let them drive him everywhere. While he understood the safety concerns, he eventually became frustrated with the lack of personal freedom.
"For a while, my security team kind of convinced me for like 10 years that I should just let them drive me places," Zuckerberg said. After years of being chauffeured, he decided to seek more independence. This desire led him to pursue aviation and learn to fly helicopters.
Zuckerberg told Von that once he started flying helicopters, he realized the situation had become somewhat ironic. "We have the security team driving me to my helicopter that I then go fly away," he joked. He noted that this arrangement did not make much sense and motivated him to start driving himself again. He also bought a car that he genuinely enjoyed using.
Despite learning to fly, Zuckerberg clarified that he does not fly helicopters alone. A professional pilot always accompanies him during flights. However, piloting the aircraft gives him a sense of flexibility and control that he felt was missing when he relied entirely on his security team for transportation.
Zuckerberg emphasized that learning to fly helicopters was not about showing off wealth or an extravagant hobby. He described it as a practical response to feeling restricted by years of security protocols. He wanted the freedom to choose how he traveled, rather than always following strict safety routines.
This is not the first time Zuckerberg has shared details about his personal interests and lifestyle. The Meta CEO, known for leading Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has often discussed topics beyond technology and business. He has spoken about his interests in mixed martial arts, jiu-jitsu, cars, and family life. He has also shared glimpses of his Hawaii estate.
