AI startup Anthropic has formed a new compute partnership with SpaceX, led by Elon Musk. This agreement gives Anthropic access to the full compute capacity of SpaceX’s Colossus 1 data center. The facility provides more than 300 megawatts of new capacity, which includes over 220,000 NVIDIA GPUs.
Anthropic states that this partnership will improve performance and reduce usage restrictions for users of its Claude AI platform. The company has started implementing changes for paid subscribers. For users on Pro, Max, Team, and seat-based Enterprise plans, Anthropic is doubling Claude Code’s five-hour usage limits.
Previously, some users faced reduced access during peak hours due to high demand. Anthropic now says it is removing peak-hour restrictions for Pro and Max subscribers. The company is also increasing API rate limits for Claude Opus models, aiming to provide a smoother user experience.
Anthropic currently trains and operates Claude on a range of AI hardware, including AWS Trainium, Google TPUs, and NVIDIA GPUs. The company continues to seek additional capacity to meet growing demand. In a blog post, Anthropic mentioned it is exploring a partnership with SpaceX to develop multiple gigawatts of orbital AI compute capacity.
SpaceX’s capabilities in frequent launches, mass-to-orbit economics, and constellation operations make it a key partner for such projects. According to xAI, the compute needs for advanced AI systems are surpassing what terrestrial infrastructure can provide in terms of power, land, and cooling within required timelines.
SpaceX is positioned as the only organization with the necessary launch frequency and operational experience to make orbital compute a near-term engineering project rather than a long-term research goal.
The AI and tech industry continues to see major partnerships and legal developments. Former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati recently testified against Sam Altman in a lawsuit involving Elon Musk. In separate news, Apple has agreed to pay USD 250 million to iPhone buyers over AI-related claims. OpenAI has also partnered with Nvidia, Microsoft, and others to build a multi-region compute (MRC) infrastructure.
