Chief scientist Jeff Dean is leaving Google after 27 years to start a new independent company. Key Leadership Changes at DeepMind

Demis Hassabis will move into the role of chair of Google’s AI unit and become chief scientist at Alphabet, Google’s parent company. DeepMind’s chief technology officer, Koray Kavukcuoglu, will become a senior vice-president and report directly to Google CEO Sundar Pichai. This restructuring follows reports that Google failed to meet internal goals, which has affected employee morale. Alphabet shares fell about 4 percent after the announcement.

Jeff Dean, who spent 27 years at Google, is leaving to start Discovery Loop, a public benefit corporation. Google will invest in Discovery Loop and provide cloud services. Dean will be joined by Google senior fellow Sanjay Ghemawat, DeepMind vice-president Oriol Vinyals, and Google Brain co-founder Quoc Le. The departure of these four senior staff members is seen as a significant loss for Google’s AI efforts.

Focus on AGI and Future AI Development

In his message to staff, Sundar Pichai said Google had made strong progress in AI and was reaching more people than any other company. He emphasized the need to move faster and focus on artificial general intelligence (AGI), where AI can think like humans. Pichai stated, “We have to accelerate all this work and stay focused on the AI frontier.”

Demis Hassabis will concentrate on AGI and its potential benefits for humanity. He said, “It’s critical that we collectively get the next steps right to ensure this all goes well for humanity and we usher in an incredible new age of discovery and wonder.” Hassabis will also remain chief executive of Isomorphic Labs, Alphabet’s AI drug discovery spin-off. His work with John Jumper on AlphaFold, which predicts 3D protein structures, won the 2024 Nobel Prize.

Discovery Loop and Google’s AI Roadmap

Jeff Dean’s new company, Discovery Loop, aims to automate machine learning, science, and engineering to accelerate progress. Dean said the company may make decisions that are not always in its financial interests. Oriol Vinyals described the move as a chance for “fun” and “freedom” in building a start-up. Pichai reportedly held several meetings to persuade the group to stay, but they chose to leave.

Koray Kavukcuoglu will now lead DeepMind’s next phase. He will oversee Gemini model development, frontier AI research, and the Gemini app and developer teams. Kavukcuoglu stated, “For Google DeepMind, our mission to build AI responsibly to benefit humanity does not change. My primary focus is ensuring we have the clearest possible path to delivering on our ambitious Gemini roadmap as we progress toward AGI.”

These leadership changes come as Google continues to compete with OpenAI and Anthropic. The company is also facing delays in the release of Gemini 3.5 Pro due to unexpected AI challenges.
