Google has expanded access to Gemini’s personalised AI image generation feature, making it free for more users in the United States. Previously, this tool was available only to Google AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra subscribers. Now, eligible free users in the US can use the Nano Banana-powered image generation tool.
The image generation feature relies on Gemini’s Personal Intelligence. This technology allows the AI to understand user preferences by using information from connected Google services. Users can generate images with shorter prompts, as Gemini draws context from services like Gmail, Google Photos, YouTube, and Google Search.
For example, instead of providing detailed instructions, a user can ask Gemini to “Design my dream house.” The AI uses information from connected services to interpret preferences for architecture, colors, or decor. Users can also request illustrations of themselves and their favorite things, and Gemini will automatically use photos from Google Photos if permissions are granted.
To use the personalised image generation tool, users must enable Personal Intelligence and connect supported Google services. The feature is optional and requires users to opt in before Gemini can access any personal data. Users can select which Google apps Gemini can access and can revoke permissions or disable Personal Intelligence at any time through the Gemini app’s Tools menu.
Google emphasizes that users remain in control of their data. Settings can be adjusted at any time, ensuring privacy and flexibility. The company states that Gemini will only access information from connected services if users provide explicit permission.
Despite making the feature free, Google has limited its availability to eligible users in the United States. The company has not announced plans for a global rollout. The free personalised image generation tool is currently not available in other regions.
While Google has expanded the broader Personal Intelligence feature to countries such as India and Japan, the free Nano Banana-powered image generation remains exclusive to US users for now. Only those eligible for Personal Intelligence can access the new feature.
Google has not provided a timeline for when the feature might become available in additional countries. The company continues to monitor user feedback and may consider broader expansion in the future.
