OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has issued a stark warning about the future impact of artificial general intelligence (AGI). In a recent post on X, Altman stated that after AGI arrives, 'no one is going to work and the economy is going to collapse.' This comment highlights his belief that AGI could fundamentally change the nature of work and economic systems.
AGI refers to artificial intelligence that can perform tasks at or beyond human capability. Altman’s remarks came soon after OpenAI introduced its latest model, GPT-5.5. The company describes GPT-5.5 as its most advanced and intuitive AI model to date.
OpenAI recently unveiled GPT-5.5, which it claims is capable of handling a broad range of tasks. These include writing, coding, research, and data analysis. The model features improved understanding of user intent, allowing it to respond with less detailed instructions.
According to OpenAI, GPT-5.5 offers enhanced agentic coding, computer use, knowledge work, and early scientific research capabilities. The company stated, 'GPT‑5.5 brings us closer to the feeling that the model can actually use the computer with you: seeing what’s on screen, clicking, typing, navigating interfaces, and moving across tools with precision.'
Altman’s comments have sparked debate about the future of employment and the global economy. If AGI can perform most jobs more efficiently than humans, it raises questions about the future role of human workers. The possibility of widespread job displacement could have significant effects on economic stability.
While AGI remains a developing concept, experts and industry leaders are closely monitoring its progress. Altman’s statements suggest that the transition to AGI could bring more disruption than many anticipate.
The launch of GPT-5.5 has also intensified discussions within the tech community. Some industry figures, such as the Claude Code product chief, have noted that frequent AI launches are causing a sense of FOMO (fear of missing out) among users.
OpenAI continues to develop advanced AI models, with each new release prompting further questions about the future of work and technology’s role in society. As AGI approaches, leaders and policymakers may need to consider new strategies to address its potential impact.
