OpenAI has introduced GPT-Live, a new generation of voice models for ChatGPT. The company aims to make conversations with AI sound more human and less robotic. GPT-Live includes two models, GPT-Live-1 and GPT-Live-1 mini, which will replace the previous advanced voice mode in ChatGPT.

Key Highlights

  • OpenAI launches GPT-Live-1 and GPT-Live-1 mini to improve ChatGPT voice conversations.
  • Full-duplex architecture allows AI to listen and speak simultaneously for more natural interactions.
  • GPT-Live outperformed previous advanced voice mode in human evaluations and technical benchmarks.
  • Safety features include protections for teens, safeguards against impersonation, and risk-based conversation controls.

Key Features of GPT-Live

OpenAI says GPT-Live reduces interruptions during conversations and works in the background while users speak. The models allow ChatGPT to continue speaking while processing tasks such as translation or research. This approach helps create a more natural flow in conversations, similar to talking with a person.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman highlighted the improvement, stating on X that GPT-Live feels "magical and real." He noted that the new voice capability may shift his preference from typing to speaking with AI.

The core of GPT-Live is a full-duplex architecture. This technology enables the AI to listen and speak at the same time. Unlike older voice systems that responded only after the user finished speaking, GPT-Live processes information continuously. The model can decide several times per second whether to speak, listen, pause, interrupt, or use a tool. It can also use conversational cues like "mhmm," "yeah," or "got it" during interactions.

Performance and User Experience

GPT-Live separates voice interaction from more complex tasks. For queries that require search or advanced reasoning, the model hands off the task to another system, currently GPT-5.5, and brings the result back into the conversation. In a demonstration, GPT-Live performed live translation into Hindi while the presenter was still speaking, then delivered the translated response.

The updated voice mode can display visual cards for topics such as weather, stocks, and sports. It continues to support search, memory, images, and file uploads. According to OpenAI, GPT-Live-1 and GPT-Live-1 mini outperformed the previous advanced voice mode in both human evaluations and technical benchmarks. In matched conversations lasting five to ten minutes, GPT-Live-1 received a preferred response rate of 75.7 percent, while GPT-Live-1 mini received 69.2 percent.

OpenAI research lead Kundan Kumar described GPT-Live-1 as the "smartest voice model" developed by the company so far. More than 150 million people use ChatGPT’s Voice and Dictation features each week for tasks such as language practice, bedtime stories, and general conversation.

Safety and Availability

OpenAI expanded safety testing for GPT-Live, focusing on areas like self-harm, psychosis, mania, emotional reliance, violence, and sexual content. The models include safeguards to guide responses toward safer output, display safety messages, or end conversations in higher-risk cases. Protections for teen users include age-appropriate behavior and parental controls. GPT-Live uses predefined voices and has measures to prevent voice impersonation.

GPT-Live is rolling out to all users on iOS, Android, and the web. GPT-Live-1 is the default for ChatGPT Go, Plus, and Pro users, while GPT-Live-1 mini is the default for free users. The models will also be available in the API, with developers and enterprises able to sign up for notifications. GPT-Live is optimized for popular languages in ChatGPT, though some languages may have non-native accents or fluency gaps. At launch, GPT-Live does not support voice with video or screen sharing, which remain available through older voice modes.
