Samsung has announced that users can now connect IKEA smart devices directly to their SmartThings hub. Previously, this required both a SmartThings hub and an IKEA hub. The update simplifies smart home integration for users of both brands.

Key Highlights

  • Samsung now allows direct connection of IKEA smart devices to SmartThings hub
  • Update supports 25 IKEA devices including sensors, bulbs, plugs, and remotes
  • No additional IKEA hub required for integration with SmartThings
  • Scroll wheel remote enables easy control of lights and blinds
  • Industry standards drive greater smart home device compatibility

Direct Integration for 25 IKEA Devices

The new feature supports 25 IKEA smart devices. These include a scroll wheel remote, smart bulbs, smart plugs, temperature and humidity sensors, air quality sensors, motion sensors, door sensors, and water leak sensors. Users no longer need to purchase an additional IKEA hub to use these devices with SmartThings.

For example, IKEA's air quality sensor can monitor temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide levels, and light intensity. Users can automate actions, such as activating a Samsung air conditioner's dehumidification mode when high humidity is detected by the sensor.

Enhanced Smart Home Automation

The scroll wheel remote is highlighted as a key device. It allows users to adjust the brightness and color temperature of smart lights by rotating the wheel. The remote also works with other devices, such as smart blinds, enabling users to set the desired position with simple gestures.

Samsung states that this integration aims to make smart home technology accessible to first-time users. The company emphasizes the importance of partnerships and industry standards in expanding the SmartThings ecosystem. Jaeyeon Jung, Executive Vice President of SmartThings, AI Platform Center at Samsung Electronics, said that the company will continue to work with partners to provide a seamless smart home experience, regardless of brand or communication protocol.

Industry Standards and Future Expansion

Samsung and Google have previously collaborated to improve compatibility between their smart home platforms. The latest announcement with IKEA highlights the ongoing industry trend toward greater interoperability. This progress is possible due to the adoption of shared standards, making it easier for consumers to connect devices from different brands.
