Amazon employees are reportedly using internal AI tools for unnecessary tasks to appear compliant with company expectations. A Financial Times report indicates some workers use the MeshClaw AI platform to boost their AI activity metrics. This comes as Amazon expands MeshClaw across its workforce and encourages widespread AI adoption.
Amazon has introduced MeshClaw, an internal AI tool, to help employees automate workplace tasks. The company wants over 80 percent of its developers to use AI weekly. Amazon tracks AI usage through internal leaderboards, monitoring metrics like "token consumption," which measures the amount of data processed by AI models.
Some employees believe their colleagues create extra AI-related activity, even when not needed, to increase their token consumption. This behavior may help them appear more engaged with AI tools and aligned with Amazon’s AI-focused culture. Although Amazon has told staff that AI usage data will not directly affect performance reviews, some workers suspect managers still consider these statistics informally.
MeshClaw allows employees to build AI agents that interact with workplace applications and perform tasks automatically. The tool can deploy code, manage emails, and connect with platforms like Slack. MeshClaw was reportedly influenced by OpenClaw, another AI agent platform that became popular for enabling users to run AI agents on personal devices.
Unlike traditional chatbots, MeshClaw’s AI agents can independently execute tasks, acting as digital assistants across company software. This automation aims to improve productivity but has also led to concerns about employees using the tool for non-essential tasks to increase their AI usage metrics.
Amazon is investing heavily in AI, with expected spending of about $200 billion this year. Most of this investment will go toward AI technology and data center infrastructure. This significant spending shows how central AI has become to Amazon’s business strategy.
The company’s push for AI adoption and tracking of usage metrics reflects a broader trend in the tech industry. As AI becomes more integrated into daily workflows, companies like Amazon are closely monitoring how employees use these tools.
