Sky has secured the broadcast rights for Formula 1 in the UK, Ireland, and Italy, extending its existing agreements. The new contracts will keep Sky as the exclusive broadcaster in these countries through 2034 in the UK and Ireland, and through 2032 in Italy.
Sky renewed its Formula 1 broadcasting rights before the current contracts expired. This move aimed to prevent a bidding war with other potential broadcasters, including Apple. The UK and Ireland contract is valued at approximately $270 million per year. Over the full term, this totals about $1.35 billion.
In Italy, the deal extends until 2032, while in the UK and Ireland, it lasts until 2034. Sky was already the existing rights holder in these markets and chose to secure its position early.
Apple recently acquired the rights to broadcast Formula 1 in the United States, starting with the 2026 season. Apple will offer F1 coverage through its Apple TV+ streaming service in the US. However, Apple has not announced any similar deals for international markets.
The renewal of Sky's contracts in the UK, Ireland, and Italy means Apple will not be able to pursue broadcast rights in these key European markets for the foreseeable future. These countries represent some of the largest audiences for Formula 1 outside the United States.
Sky's proactive approach to renewing its contracts highlights the competitive nature of sports broadcasting. By extending its agreements early, Sky avoided competition from new entrants like Apple, which has shown interest in expanding its sports streaming portfolio.
The value of the UK and Ireland deal underscores the importance of Formula 1 to broadcasters and the significant investment required to secure exclusive rights. With these contracts in place, Sky will continue to deliver Formula 1 coverage to millions of viewers in these regions for the next decade.
