AWS launches a $1 billion Forward Deployed Engineering (FDE) initiative to embed thousands of AI engineers directly within enterprise client teams.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced a $1 billion investment to establish a Forward Deployed Engineering (FDE) team. This move aims to help businesses integrate advanced AI tools into their existing systems. The announcement follows similar steps by OpenAI and Anthropic, who set up dedicated AI service companies earlier this year.

Key Highlights

  • Amazon invests $1 billion to create an AWS Forward Deployed Engineering team for AI integration.
  • AWS FDE teams will embed engineers within client organizations to build and deploy AI systems.
  • OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google are also expanding Forward Deployed Engineering roles.
  • FDE salaries at Google and OpenAI range from $153,000 to $335,000 for US positions.

Amazon's New FDE Initiative

On Tuesday, AWS revealed the creation of a new internal organization focused on Forward Deployed Engineering. The company will embed engineers directly within client teams to assist in building and deploying AI systems. AWS vice-president Francessca Vasquez stated that customers want to rebuild business processes with agentic AI and require expert engineers to work alongside them.

The FDE teams will consist of about five or six engineers assigned to each client. These teams will work closely with customers' business, engineering, and security departments. Their goal is to build production AI systems using the clients’ own data, governance, and processes. AWS plans to seed this new organization with "thousands" of FDEs.

The company emphasized that its FDE engagements focus on achieving business outcomes rather than billing by the hour. AWS aims to deliver AI solutions quickly and ensure that client teams can operate independently after deployment. "Customers leave AWS FDE deployments with both new solutions and new engineering capabilities," the company said.

Industry Context and Comparisons

OpenAI and Anthropic have also established separate service companies to provide FDE support, raising millions of dollars in funding. Unlike AWS, which is building an internal team, these companies operate as external service providers. Google is also expanding its FDE hiring, aiming to meet the growing demand for enterprise AI products.

Some industry observers have compared the FDE model to services offered by Indian IT firms such as TCS and Infosys, which modernize legacy systems with new technologies. However, AWS and others are focusing specifically on AI integration and agentic AI capabilities.

Currently, AWS FDE teams are working with organizations including the Allen Institute, Cox Automotive, the NBA, Ricoh, Southwest Airlines, and the NFL. These collaborations highlight the increasing demand for embedded engineering expertise as companies move from AI experimentation to operational deployment.

FDE Salaries and Demand

Demand for Forward Deployed Engineers is rising across the tech sector. Google Cloud lists base salaries for US FDE positions ranging from $153,000 (about Rs 1.46 crore) to $222,000 (about Rs 2.12 crore). OpenAI offers packages between $198,000 (about Rs 1.89 crore) and $335,000 (about Rs 3.2 crore) for similar roles.

With major technology companies investing in FDE teams, the role is becoming central to enterprise AI adoption. The trend is expected to continue as more businesses seek to integrate AI into their core operations.
