OpenAI co-founder Andrej Karpathy joins Anthropic to lead a new pretraining research team focused on using Claude to automate AI development.

Andrej Karpathy, a co-founder of OpenAI and a leading figure in artificial intelligence, has joined Anthropic. The move marks a significant development in the ongoing competition for top AI talent. Karpathy announced his decision on X, stating he will focus on research and development at Anthropic. He described the upcoming years at the forefront of large language models (LLMs) as especially formative.

Key Highlights

  • Andrej Karpathy, OpenAI co-founder, joins Anthropic to lead AI pretraining research.
  • Karpathy will build a team focused on using Claude to automate pretraining processes.
  • Anthropic states Claude writes 90 percent of the company’s code.
  • Ross Nordeen, former xAI member, also joined Anthropic this month.

Karpathy's Career and Influence

Karpathy co-founded OpenAI nearly ten years ago before joining Tesla in 2017. At Tesla, he led the automaker’s artificial intelligence team for over five years. He played a key role in advancing AI-driven code generation, a practice now widely known as “vibe coding.” This term has become common among developers who use coding agents in their work.

After leaving Tesla in 2022, Karpathy briefly returned to OpenAI. He later founded Eureka Labs, an education company focused on artificial intelligence. Karpathy holds a PhD in computer science from Stanford University. He has also become a prominent educator, building a large audience on YouTube and X by sharing technical insights and explanations about AI.

Role at Anthropic and Industry Impact

At Anthropic, Karpathy will join the pretraining division, which is responsible for the large-scale training of the Claude AI model. Nicholas Joseph, who leads the pretraining team at Anthropic, confirmed that Karpathy will build a new team. This group will focus on using Claude itself to accelerate pretraining research, aiming to automate a key part of AI development.

Anthropic has previously stated that Claude writes 90 percent of the company’s code. Nicholas Joseph expressed enthusiasm about Karpathy’s arrival, highlighting his expertise in AI research and his suitability for the new role. The company expects Karpathy’s leadership to enhance its pretraining capabilities.

The addition of Karpathy comes as Anthropic continues to attract experienced AI professionals. Earlier in the month, Ross Nordeen, a founding member of xAI and former Tesla employee, also joined Anthropic. On the same day, Anthropic announced an agreement with SpaceX to rent compute capacity at xAI’s Colossus 1 supercomputer.

Industry Recognition and Recent Developments

Karpathy’s work at OpenAI and Tesla was referenced during Elon Musk’s recent legal proceedings against OpenAI. In court, Musk described Karpathy as “arguably the number two guy in the world in computer vision.” Musk also acknowledged the significance of hiring Karpathy away from OpenAI in internal communications.

Karpathy has recently described his intense focus on AI research, referring to a “state of AI psychosis” since December and a commitment to stress-testing advanced models. His move to Anthropic is expected to influence the direction of AI research and development as competition for senior talent intensifies across the industry.
