Nationwide Alert System Trial

The alert system uses the Common Alerting Protocol (CAP), which follows guidelines from the International Telecommunication Union, a United Nations agency.

This system is now active in all 36 States and Union Territories of India. It sends disaster and emergency alerts via SMS to mobile users in specific geographic areas. The alerts aim to provide timely information during natural disasters or other emergencies.

Cell Broadcast Technology Implementation

In addition to SMS, the government has introduced Cell Broadcast (CB) technology for alerts. With CB, messages are sent to all mobile devices within a defined area at the same time. This ensures that alerts reach people quickly and efficiently, regardless of their mobile network or device settings.

Officials are conducting nationwide tests and trials to evaluate the performance and reliability of the new system. The public may receive test messages in English, Hindi, and various regional languages during this phase. These messages are for validation purposes only, and no action is required from recipients.

Public Cooperation and Future Plans

The Department of Telecom has requested public cooperation during the testing phase. After successful trials, the system will become fully operational across India. It will send emergency alerts in multiple Indian languages to all mobile handsets, ensuring that important information reaches as many people as possible during real emergencies.
