UBTech introduces the UWORLD U1 humanoid robot for companionship. Features lifelike silicone skin, 88 servo joints, and local emotional AI.

China-based robotics company UBTech has introduced the UWORLD U1, a new humanoid robot designed for companionship and emotional support. The robot was unveiled in Shenzhen on June 30 and is intended for use in homes and service industries, rather than factories. UBTech aims to address the growing demand for robots that interact naturally with people and provide support in daily life.

Key Highlights

  • UBTech unveiled the UWORLD U1 humanoid robot in Shenzhen on June 30.
  • U1 features silicone skin, emotional AI, and stores user data locally for privacy.
  • Robot is available in three variants with prices from 119,800 yuan to 990,000 yuan.
  • Cumulative orders for the U1 series reached 13,361 units at launch.
  • Designed for companionship and service roles, not industrial use.

Key Features and Specifications

The UWORLD U1 features a human-like appearance with silicone skin and advanced emotional artificial intelligence (AI). The robot is available in three variants: Lite, Pro, and Ultra. Prices start at 119,800 yuan (about Rs 14 lakh) and go up to 990,000 yuan (about Rs 1.15 crore). UBTech reported that cumulative orders for the U1 series reached 13,361 units on the launch day, indicating significant early interest.

The U1 comes in both male and female versions, measuring 183cm and 168cm tall, respectively. It includes 88 servo joints, allowing for a wide range of human-like movements. The silicone exterior is designed to enhance lifelike appearance and improve face-to-face interactions.

Emotional AI and Privacy Measures

One of the main features of the U1 is its emotional AI system. UBTech states that the robot can recognize over 20 emotional states, maintain eye contact during conversations, and remember previous interactions. This allows the robot to deliver more personalized responses over time.

The emotional AI model operates locally on Rockchip's RK3588 processor, enabling the robot to process conversations and interactions without heavy reliance on cloud servers. User data is stored directly on the device, not uploaded to the cloud. UBTech emphasizes a three-layer privacy architecture, focusing on local-first processing, minimal cloud dependency, and user-controlled hardware protections. This approach addresses privacy concerns as companion robots become more integrated into personal spaces.

Intended Use and Broader Platform

UBTech specifies that the U1 is available only to adult buyers and is not an industrial robot. The robot is developed for companionship and customer-facing environments where natural communication is essential. Applications include elder care, education, hospitality, reception, and premium home services.

At the launch event, UBTech founder and CEO James Zhou highlighted the shift in robotics from industrial tasks to companionship and service roles. Zhou stated that robots are evolving to become intelligent partners in everyday life.

UBTech also introduced its broader UWORLD platform, which integrates biomimetic skin technology, embodied AI hardware, operating systems, emotion-driven large language models, and manufacturing technologies. The U1's biomimetic facial expression system keeps speech and lip movements synchronized within 20 milliseconds. Its Agent Memory OS enables long-term memory and continuous interactions. The robot can respond proactively to its environment without needing a wake word.
