Anthropic has become the world’s most valuable AI startup, surpassing OpenAI after announcing a $65 billion fundraising round. This new funding values Anthropic at $965 billion. The company may be preparing for its final major private funding round before a possible public market debut.
Anthropic’s valuation has surged from $380 billion in February to $965 billion after the latest fundraising. In comparison, OpenAI’s last fundraising round in March valued it at $852 billion. This rapid increase highlights Anthropic’s emergence as a leading competitor in the AI sector and shows strong investor interest in advanced AI companies.
Anthropic is competing with OpenAI for technological leadership and market share in the fast-growing AI industry. Both companies are reportedly considering public offerings as early as this year. They seek to secure the large computing resources needed to power AI services and train new models.
Anthropic has faced challenges meeting rising demand for its services. The company has introduced usage limits during peak hours and encouraged users to shift activity to off-peak times by offering additional compute access. In a statement about the funding, Anthropic said the capital will help expand computing resources to meet growing demand for its Claude AI model.
Since its Series G round in February, Anthropic has seen increased adoption among global enterprise customers. The company reported that its run-rate revenue crossed $47 billion earlier this month.
The latest fundraising round included strategic infrastructure partners such as Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron. About $15 billion of the round consists of previously committed investments from hyperscalers. This includes a $5 billion investment from Amazon announced in April.
Anthropic announced its new Claude Opus 4.8 model on the same day as the fundraising news. The company says the model offers improved performance in agentic tasks, advanced coding, and better honesty and self-correction. Anthropic is also preparing for a wider release of models similar to its cybersecurity-focused AI system, Mythos. Previously, access to Mythos was limited due to safety concerns.
Other companies are also advancing their AI offerings. Google recently launched AI Threat Defense to compete with Anthropic Mythos and OpenAI Daybreak. Alibaba’s latest AI model, Qwen, has outperformed Google Gemini and ChatGPT in coding tasks. Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis has provided a new timeline for artificial general intelligence, predicting its arrival in 2029.
