Elon Musk and Sam Altman, once allies in the AI world, are now locked in an intense public feud. Their relationship, which started when Musk co-founded OpenAI in 2015, has sharply deteriorated since Musk left the company in 2018. Musk, who was the biggest financial backer of OpenAI at the time, became increasingly frustrated with the company’s direction, which he felt wasn’t aligned with his vision. He later proposed to take control of OpenAI, but the board rejected his offer, leading to his departure.

Since then, Musk has been outspoken about his disapproval of OpenAI, especially after the company made a controversial shift to a "capped" for-profit model. Musk has accused OpenAI of betraying its original nonprofit mission and has filed several lawsuits to stop the company from becoming fully for-profit. In March 2024, Musk took legal action against OpenAI, claiming it violated its founding principles by striking a multi-billion-dollar deal with Microsoft, which he says gave the tech giant too much control over the company’s future.

Most recently, Musk escalated his attacks, calling Altman "Swindly Sam" and OpenAI a "market-paralyzing gorgon." His remarks reflect a growing frustration with Altman, whom Musk no longer trusts. In interviews, Musk has said he doesn’t believe OpenAI’s leadership can be trusted with the world’s most powerful AI technologies, casting doubt on Altman’s intentions. He told Fox News’s Tucker Carlson in October that he didn’t think the public should allow someone he perceives as untrustworthy to control AI development.

On the other hand, Sam Altman has downplayed Musk’s attacks. Speaking at a New York Times conference, Altman expressed disappointment over their fractured relationship but called it a normal part of business competition. He acknowledged that Musk’s company, xAI, is a significant competitor in the AI space. However, Altman remained unperturbed by Musk's influence in the incoming Trump administration, where Musk is playing a prominent role. He believes it would be "un-American" for Musk to use his political power to harm competitors, and that the public wouldn’t tolerate such behavior.

While Musk and Altman continue to clash, they are both facing separate legal challenges. Altman’s OpenAI is involved in ongoing lawsuits related to copyright infringement for using news articles to train AI systems like ChatGPT. The coming months will likely see further escalation in both their personal and professional disputes, with major implications for the future of AI development.
