Spotify has launched a new feature that allows users to listen to narrated long-form magazine articles. This addition aims to make it easier for people to consume written stories while multitasking, such as cooking or commuting. The service is now available to Spotify Premium subscribers, who can access over 650 English-language articles from major publications.
Spotify's narrated articles come from well-known sources, including Rolling Stone, The Atlantic, Vogue, Variety, Billboard, Vibe, GQ, Wired, Vanity Fair, and Pitchfork. Each article is under two hours long and produced by Spotify’s in-house audiobooks team. The company uses a combination of human narrators and AI-generated voices for these stories. Spotify clearly labels articles that use digital voice narration so listeners know when AI is involved.
This feature is designed to fit alongside Spotify’s existing content, such as music, podcasts, and audiobooks. The company believes narrated articles will offer a less intimidating entry point for users interested in audio storytelling. Spotify states that these shorter listens could encourage more people to try longer audio formats like full-length books.
Premium subscribers can listen to narrated articles as part of their existing 15 hours of audiobook listening time each month. Free users do not have access to this feature as part of their plan. However, they can purchase individual narrated articles for $1.99, which is about Rs 190. Spotify has not yet announced specific pricing for India.
Spotify says the goal is to make audio storytelling more accessible. The company hopes that narrated articles will help users discover new content and develop a habit of listening to longer stories. Spotify also highlights that its recommendation and personalisation systems can connect listeners with articles that match their interests, benefiting both users and media publishers.
This move comes as Spotify continues to expand its AI-powered audio features. In recent weeks, the company has introduced AI-generated podcasts and tools for authors to create audiobooks using AI. Spotify has also added support for AI-created covers, remixes, and new fitness content. These additions reflect Spotify’s strategy to broaden its audio offerings and use technology to enhance user experience.
Spotify positions narrated articles as a natural extension of its platform. The company believes this feature will appeal to users who already enjoy podcasts and audiobooks, while also attracting new audiences interested in magazine journalism. By leveraging its technology and partnerships with major publishers, Spotify aims to strengthen its role as a leading audio platform.
