Spotify has announced a partnership with Universal Music Group to allow users to create AI-generated covers and remixes of licensed songs. This marks the first time Spotify will officially let users generate AI music content using material from major artists on its platform.

Spotify and Universal Music Group Collaboration

Universal Music Group is one of the largest music companies globally, representing artists such as Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Drake, and Billie Eilish. In 2024, Universal Music Group sued AI music startups for $500 million over alleged copyright violations. Following the partnership announcement with Spotify, Universal Music Group’s shares rose by approximately 16 percent.

The companies have not specified which artists will participate in the new feature. The AI music creation tool will be available as a paid add-on for Spotify Premium subscribers. Spotify has not yet disclosed pricing details or the official launch date for this feature.

Features and Artist Control

The upcoming Spotify feature will let users create AI-powered versions of songs, including covers and remixes based on existing music. Spotify states the system is built around “consent, credit and compensation.” Artists and songwriters can choose whether to allow their music to be used for AI-generated content.

Spotify Co-CEO Alex Norström emphasized that the company aims to develop AI music tools through licensing agreements. He stated that Spotify will not release features without permission from rights holders. This approach contrasts with AI startups that have faced criticism and lawsuits for using copyrighted music in training data without authorization.

Competition and Additional AI Features

The partnership positions Spotify in direct competition with AI music platforms like Suno and Udio, which already offer AI-generated music tools. Unlike many AI startups, Spotify’s approach focuses on licensed agreements with record labels and artists from the outset.

Spotify has previously introduced several AI-powered features, such as AI DJ, AI-generated playlists, and voice-based music recommendations. During its recent Investor Day presentation, Spotify also announced new AI tools for audiobook creation and podcast production.
