Apple is preparing to release a major update to Siri later this year, integrating Google's Gemini AI models. This move places Apple in direct competition with leading AI chatbots such as ChatGPT. The update will focus on privacy, offering users an auto-delete feature for chat history.
According to Bloomberg, the new Siri will include an auto-delete option for conversations. Users can choose to keep Siri chat history for 30 days, one year, or indefinitely. This mirrors the options already available in Apple's Messages app. The auto-delete feature is expected to be part of a new standalone Siri app currently in development.
The upcoming Siri app aims to provide an experience similar to other AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Gemini. Typically, AI chatbots use conversation history to improve responses. However, privacy concerns have led companies to introduce incognito modes. Recently, Meta added an incognito chat window for its Meta AI chatbot.
The revamped Siri is anticipated to be one of the most significant updates to Apple's personal assistant. The new version will likely handle more complex queries, a task currently managed by ChatGPT through Apple's partnership with OpenAI. Reports suggest this partnership has caused tensions between the two companies.
In addition to the standalone app, users may receive a new “Search or Ask” shortcut. This feature could be activated by swiping down from the top center of the screen. Users might also have the option to open the app to a grid of previous conversations or start a new chat each time.
While Apple plans to use Google's Gemini AI models to power Siri, it remains unclear if Apple will rely on Google's computing infrastructure. Previous reports indicate Apple may require solutions that meet its strict privacy standards.
Apple is expected to unveil the new Siri at the Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) in June. However, the updated Siri will likely become available with the iOS 27 update, which is expected to launch alongside the iPhone 18 Pro models in September.
Internal testing versions of iOS 27 reportedly include a beta label for the new Siri and a toggle to exit the beta. At launch, the new Siri may still carry the beta designation.
