At the upcoming developer's conference, WWDC 2023, starting on June 5, Apple plans to unveil its latest iOS 17 and watchOS 10 alongside other new products.

Apple WWDC

Despite earlier rumours that iOS 17 would prioritise improving its smartphone OS stability, recent reports indicate that it will also introduce several beneficial features. Similarly, watchOS 10, the 10th version of Apple's smartwatch OS, is expected to offer new features.

This is what we know so far about Apple's upcoming iPhone and Watch operating systems.

iOS 17

Side-loading

According to reports, the main highlight of iOS 17 is the capability to install apps from outside sources without needing to jailbreak the device. The Europe Digital Market Act (DMA) requires that all smartphones sold from 2024 onward must provide the option of using an alternative app store, which could mean that Apple may permit app sideloading on iPhones. It is possible that this feature will only be available in European markets.

Support for Mixed Reality Headset

The launch of Apple's AR/VR headset is imminent, which implies that iOS 17 will be equipped with built-in compatibility for the upcoming mixed-reality headset. Although the Reality Pro is a standalone device that operates on xrOS, it may require an iPhone for configuration. Therefore, it is probable that iOS 17 will include native support for Apple's upcoming AR/VR headset.

Revamped Control Center

According to reports, iOS 17 will feature a revamped control centre with significant user interface enhancements. The updated layout of the control centre is expected to be more user-friendly, with an optimised menu designed to cater to the larger screen sizes of iPhones. This new design is a departure from the one introduced with iOS 11 in 2017. Additionally, it is rumoured that iOS 17 will include the ability to support web browsers that do not use WebKit. This feature would enable app developers to create web browsers that meet their specific requirements without relying on Apple's WebKit tool.

Improved CarPlay

Reports suggest that iPhones will receive enhanced CarPlay functionality with the release of iOS 17. The update is rumoured to include several new features such as improved wireless CarPlay, support for widgets, and an updated user interface for CarPlay displayed on the car's dashboard.

Which iPhones will support iOS 17?

Apple is expected to end support for older iPhones models till iPhone X.

iOS 17 will likely be supported by the iPhone XS and XS Max to the latest iPhone 14 series.

WatchOS 10

Completely new UI

Apple is reportedly planning to give watchOS 10 a significant overhaul with the release of the 10th edition. The update may include changes to how users interact with the watch, as well as alterations to the user interface of the sub-menu system. Similar to iOS 17, watchOS 10 may also include support for virtual reality headsets, although it is expected that the functionality will be limited on the wearable device in comparison to an iPhone.

Increase standalone functionality

It is rumoured that Apple may enhance the independence of its watch with the release of watchOS 10, enabling it to perform most functions even when not connected to an iPhone. These functions could include on-device language translation in real-time, improved messaging capabilities, the ability to control various Apple devices directly from the watch, and other features.

Which Apple Watches will support WatchOS 10?

WatchOS 10 will be supported by the Apple Watch Series 4 all the way to the latest Apple Watch Series 8 and Apple Watch Ultra. Older versions including the Series 3 and older are expected to be axed.
